Chapter 47. What Do Dietitians Know That We Don't?

Would you like to get along with minimal air and water, just breathing and drinking enough to survive? Would you like to get along with just minimal nutrition? Or would you like to safeguard your body with optimal nutrition? It's your choice! Let's take a look at what the experts do!

A 1984 study of 900 dietitians in Washington State published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, revealed that nearly 60% of this relatively knowledgeable group took some kind of supplement, usually a multi-vitamin-mineral product.

This particular study didn't ask these people "why" they were taking supplements but other studies have. the most common answer was "Insurance".

Even people who know how to eat right like to make sure they get their nutrients every day!

The study stated,, "Even though meeting nutritional needs through diet alone is clearly the ideal, use of multivitamin-mineral supplements may be supported for individuals when personal dietary patterns fall short of this ideal"

This raises the question: "Are you sure you eat three square meals a day?" It might be possible for three square meals (or maybe three "pryamid" meals, pun intended) a day to provide a person with all the nutrients their body needs, especially when wise choices are made in food selection. But,

Who eats three square meals a day of wise food choices?

With almost half of the nation trying to lose weight by cutting back on calories, who of that group even eats enough food to get their daily supply of nutrients? Remember too, the Standard American Diet is sadly lacking in vitamins, minerals, and fiber.

To make sure your diet contains the necessary vitamins, minerals, protein and fiber, I encourage you to supplement with a multivitamin-mineral product, a vegetable based protein drink mix and a fiber product containing all five important dietary fiber sources: cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, gums, and pectin. Bran, remember, contains only three sources of these fibers.
